Patients
We have developed over 40 topics in our Community and Patient Education Guides to ensure that consistent and accurate information is shared. They are used:
For individual education specific to the patient's diagnosis
For teaching classes
By the interpreters, providers, and team members to educate patients and family members
The topics were identified in collaboration with local healthcare workers based on community needs. The content is reviewed by our host and local healthcare workers to ensure that the information is appropriate for their culture.
The information is based on the latest evidence, guidelines, and standards, such as those developed by the World Health Organization and updated annually.
The Education Guides are sent to the interpreters in advance so they can prepare. They are also encouraged to use the Guides after the team departs to educate their community.
Discharge Teaching
Every patient attends a discharge teaching session for education as prescribed by the provider.
Nurses use the Health • Education • Empowerment Community & Patient Education Guides to provide consistent, evidence-based information.
Basic health promotion and prevention information is emphasized.
Group classes
Group classes are held throughout the day for patients waiting to be seen in the clinic.
A team member and interpreter teach topics that are of general interest, such as back pain and how to do back exercises, high blood pressure, diarrhea, and malaria.
Daily classes are held for adults about the proper use of condoms. Free condoms are distributed after the class.
Thousands of condoms are distributed each year.
Each session is followed by questions and answers.
